How to Invite Someone to Church

The scriptures call on us to do the work of an evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5). Here are 10 practical steps to Invite Someone to Church:

Step 1 – Make a list.

Who will you invite to church? Make a list of everyone you can think of. Include friends, neighbors, coworkers-even the Avon lady!

Step 2 – Pray!

Pray to God for the courage to ask. Pray that the individual will accept the invitation.

Step 3 – Remember your motive.

Love, not conversion, should be your motive for inviting someone to church.

Step 4 – Before you invite someone into your church, invite them into your life. (Relationship)

Extend an invitation for lunch or for a long walk in the park. Use that time to share your testimony of how God changed your life. Extend your invitation, and let someone else experience the wonders of God’s love!

Step 5 – Distribute invitation cards.

These can be picked up in the church lobby. Carry them with you – in your car, in your purse, etc.- but look for opportunities to pass them out. If the goal is to invite, they do no good staying with you…pass them on to another.

Step 6 – Prepare invitees for the experience.

Believe it or not, there are many people who have never been to church. Explain to them the proper dress and what a typical service is like, etc. Also, explain our church’s mission – building and rebuilding lives through Jesus Christ. This may help the individual to connect with our church’s cause.

Step 7 – Offer your invitee a ride.

This is a practical service to them and they will probably feel less anxious upon arrival.

Step 8 – If possible, let your pastor and other church members know you’ll be bringing a guest.

This is helpful in ensuring your guest receive a warm welcome which will encourage them concerning the church. Be willing to make the effort to introduce your guest to the pastor and other key people that may be good for them to connect with (People of similar interests or life experiences).

Step 9 – Be Persistent.

Most people will decline your invitation the first time around. Perhaps they have plans for that day. Extend repeated invitations and don’t give up because they don’t seem interested.

Step 10 – Trust the Power of God’s Spirit to Draw Them.

It’s our role to extend the invitation but remember it is God’s place to tug on their heart and draw them! You do your part and let God do His.
